A Bicycle Rally in Toowoomba

In an effort to improve conditions for cyclists in the Toowoomba region, there will be a rally for cyclists on Sunday 4th of December 2011.

This is being promoted as a family friendly event, and encouragement is being given for people of all ages to attend.

The rally will commence at 10am from the car park outside Harvey Norman on Ruthven Street, proceed along Ruthven Street (with a brief photo stop in front of Toowoomba Town Hall), then turning right into Margaret Street, and continuing to Queens Park where the rally will finish with a free BBQ for all riders.

I have listed below, the issues for which we will be campaigning:

*  Better bike lane networks in and around the Toowoomba region to encourage cycling as a
form of fitness (helping to reduce obesity and associated medical conditions), as well as
promoting a healthy environment (fewer cars on the road) and saving petrol at the same time. And above all it can be fun.

*  A more connected/consistent network of bike lanes not only through the Toowoomba CBD, and also a grid network linking both North, South and East West around the outer edges of Toowoomba for riders to commute if they do not work in the CBD.

*  A set of bike lanes radiating out at least 2 kms from schools, as well as secure end of ride
facilities to encourage school children to ride to and from school safely.

*  Community awareness and encouraging the Toowoomba Regional Council and the
Queensland Dept of Transport and Main Roads to join together with the media in promoting
the health and environmental as well as economic benefits of cycling.

*  One concern is the lack of legislation banning parking in dedicated bike lanes. As the law
currently stands, the police can't fine a vehicle for parking in a bike lane and as a result
there is no incentive to stop drivers blocking cyclists and as a result possibly endangering
their safety when they are forced out into traffic.

*  We would also encourage the construction of dedicated bike lanes from major growth
areas such as Highfields and Hodgson Vale into the centre of Toowoomba to promote
cycling in a safe environment, with appropriate changes to speed limits.
